Is expedited car shipping worth paying for?
Expedited and guaranteed pickup options cost more because the company has to reserve space on a truck. When it's worth it, and what to get in writing.
Standard car shipping gives you a pickup window of a few days. If you need the car picked up on a specific day, many companies offer expedited or guaranteed pickup for an extra fee.
Why it costs more
To promise a date, the company has to pay a carrier enough to change its route or hold space for your car. That premium is passed on to you. Depending on the route and season it can add a meaningful amount to the price.
When it's worth it
- You're flying out and nobody can hand over the car later.
- A lease return or sale has a fixed deadline.
- You have no flexibility at all, and a missed pickup would cost you more than the fee.
When it probably isn't
- You can be flexible by two or three days.
- You're shipping in a quiet season on a busy route, where pickups happen quickly anyway.
- The company promises "expedited" but won't put the date in writing.
Get the details in writing
Before paying extra, ask:
- Is the pickup date guaranteed, or only "prioritized"?
- What happens if they miss the date: a refund of the premium, or nothing?
- Does "expedited" also mean a faster delivery, or only a faster pickup?
A cheaper alternative
Book earlier. Two to four weeks of notice often gets you a pickup close to your preferred date without the premium. See how long car shipping takes.
