Shipping a classic, luxury or exotic car

High-value cars need more than a standard booking: enclosed transport, the right loading equipment, and insurance that matches the car's value.

If your car is a classic, a collector piece, an exotic or just worth well above average, it's worth taking a few extra steps when you ship it.

Choose enclosed transport

An enclosed trailer protects against weather, road debris and prying eyes. For most high-value cars it's the obvious choice. See open vs enclosed.

Ask about loading equipment

  • Lift gates are better than ramps for low or long cars.
  • Soft straps that go around the wheels, rather than chains attached to the frame, are preferred for many collector cars.
  • Ask whether the driver has experience with your type of car.

Match the insurance to the value

A carrier's cargo insurance is shared across every car on the truck and may not cover a very valuable car in full. Before you book:

  • Ask for the carrier's certificate of insurance and cargo limit.
  • Ask whether they offer coverage at an agreed value.
  • Talk to your collector car insurer. Many specialist policies cover transport.

Document the car thoroughly

Take detailed, date-stamped photos and video, including the interior, underside and odometer. For very valuable cars, a professional appraisal before shipping is worth having.

Be ready to pay more and wait a little longer

There are fewer enclosed carriers, so prices are higher and scheduling takes longer. Booking several weeks ahead helps.

Look for companies whose reviews mention enclosed or collector shipments: search companies.
